CERTH awarded in the world competition ANSYS Hall of Fame 2016

Researchers from the City University of London (CUL) and the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), were awarded in the world competition ANSYS Hall of Fame 2016 with the Best Award in Show: Academic http://www.ansys.com/Other/Hall-of-Fame/CUL).

The winning study deals with the numerical simulation of high carbon chain hydrocarbons fuel droplets impacting onto spherical catalyst particles in the ambient environment of fluid catalytic cracking reactors (FCCs) thus converting into organic compounds of lower carbon chain. The influence of important process parameters as such of temperature, particle size of the solid catalyst and the initial impact velocity on both the quantity of the compounds and their composition were examined by numerical means. The numerical results depict that the impact between fuel droplets and hot catalyst of the same size promotes significantly the conversion rate, allowing for higher yield production, while significantly reduces the probability of catalyst deactivation. The developed model is capable of simulating any fuel-catalyst interaction conditions and can examine how these affect the production of lower carbon chain compounds.

The study was performed using the ANSYS tools platform, with the simultaneous development and appliance of individual house-built models by the research team. The ANSYS is the strongest company in the field of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and SimTec  the representative of ANSYS in SE Europe. The researchers at CUL and CERTH would like to thank the European Commission for funding this work, by the Marie Curie Fellowship (FP7-PEOPLE-2012-IEF), GA No 329500 entitled as “Non Flat Impingement”.
