Press Release CERTH/CPERIs’ researcher receives Chorafa Award 2016 [20 February 2015]

Thessaloniki, October 2015

Dr. Konstantinos Atsonios, research associate at the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas/Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CERTH/CPERI), awarded the Dimitris Chorafas Prize 2016, for his PhD Thesis that he did at the National Technical University of Athens in collaboration with CERTH/CPERI. The Dimitris Chorafas’ Foundation awards scientific prizes for outstanding work in selected fields in the engineering and the natural sciences and medicine. It rewards research characterized by its high potential for practical application and by the special significance attached to its aftermath. The title of the PhD Thesis is “Process integration of advanced technologies for carbon capture and the production of alternative fuels from CO2 and biomass” and its scope is the design, the process integration and the simulation of various advanced energy systems, the common feature of which is the absence or the minimization of GHG emissions. The main issues that are attempted to be addressed in this Thesis are related to the terms and frames of proper and feasible operation of innovative energy systems.

Professor Emmanuel Kakaras, director of CERTH/CPERI, was the supervisor of this Thesis. At different stages of this work, results were published in book chapters (3) scientific journals (12) and international scientific conferences proceedings (14). A considerable part of this work is owed to the involvement of Dr. Konstantinos Atsonios in scientific projects, that CERTH/CPERI was participated. More specifically, the EU funded project CAL-MOD (RFCS-CT-2010-0013, http://cal-mod.eu-projects.de/) where Dr. Panagiotis Grammelis was scientific responsible and the EU funded project EUROBIOREF (FP7-ENERGY-241718, http://www.eurobioref.org/ ) where Dr. Kyriakos Panopoulos was scientific responsible.
