The Descartes Award in Greek Hands to CERTH / CPERI - A World Recognition


Brussels, 7 March 2007 - Three research projects financed by the European Commssion were today awarded a share
of the  € 1 million Descartes prize for Research at a ceremony in Brussels.
The ceremony was attended by the German Federal Minister for Education & Research, Dr. Annette Schavan  and European Science & Research Commissioner, Dr. Janez Potocnik.
The ceremony coincides with celebrations of the contribution of research to the EU over the last 50 years.
 
 
The 3 excellent European projects are:
 
the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS)
 
the Hydrosol  project- Advanced Monolithic Reactors for
    Solar Hydrogen Production via Water Splitting &
 
the APOPTOSIS project (programmed cell death) in cell biology
 
 
In Hydrosol project coordinator of the transnational research team is  Assoc. Professor Ath. Konstandopoulos, Director of the Chemical Process Engineering Researc Institute of CERTH, and Head of the Aerosol and Particle Technology Laboratory ( ATP). For the implementation of the Hydrosol project collaborated academics & businesses from Greece, Germany, Denmark and the UK.

Hydrogen: vector for clean energy
Anthanasios Konstandopoulos (Director of the APT Lab, CPERI) is the head of the European project Hydrosol. The goal of the project is to produce hydrogen from exclusively renewable resources. Dr. Konstandopoulos is an expert in catalytic converters for car engines and has used his knowledge of this technology to produce hydrogen using a green method.
