RINNO - An augmented intelligence-enabled stimulating framework for deep energy renovation delivering occupant-centered innovations

Monday, 18 January 2021

RINNO is an EU-funded project that aims at delivering a holistic framework solution to facilitate the deep-renovation of buildings taking into account the occupants’ requirements. The RINNO framework considers all stages of the renovation process (planning-design, retrofitting, operation and monitoring and utilizes a range of innovative technologies, processes and business models in order to address the current technical and socio-economical barriers and challenges of the building renovation market.

A set of cost-effective, easily applicable building technologies with low environmental impact will be applied. These are grouped into a) plug-n-play, modular building envelope solutions, and b) RES, hybrid and storage solutions. RINNO couples the above technologies with innovative retrofitting processes, methods and tools, characterized by low tenants’ disruption. These comprise: efficient (off/on-site) construction strategies, on-the-job AR facilitating environment and multi-stakeholder collaboration. The above will be supported by novel business models aligned with circular economy principles and enriched with investment de-risking tools and advanced crowd-equity/crowd-lending schemes.

At full rollout it is expected that the project will contribute to the acceleration of the annual renovation rate reaching an ambitious annual rate of 3.5% at the EU level. Overall, it is expected to lead to 30% cost and 40% time savings in the renovation process and deliver primary energy reduction of 165 GWh/year and emissions reduction of 40,400 tonnes of CO2-eq.

CERTH’s role

Two Institutes of CERTH, the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) and the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (CPERI) are participating  in the project  and are responsible for the development of a smart decision support system for the selection of the optimum renovation solution as well as the development of a unified communication platform and the project’s augmented reality framework. Dr. Dimitrios Tzovaras holds the role of the project’s Scientific and Technical Manager and Dr. Nikolaos Nikolopoulos the role of the Quality Assurance manager.
