Award in the Competition "Greece Innovates" @ CPERI/CERTH
[12 Jul 2011]

Thessaloniki, July 12, 2011 -  The research team of Dr. Stella Bezergianni from the Center of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) from Chemical Process Engineering and Research Institute (CPERI) has won the second reward in the Competition “Greece Innovates” that had been co-organized from the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and the Eurobank EFG. The award ceremony has taken place on Tuesday 5 July in the centre of Culture “Hellenic World” in Athens.

In a country that produces mostly cooking oil than crude-oil, this research team had developed a new innovative technology that produces second generation biodiesel via catalytic hydrotreating of waste cooking oil.

This new type of biofuel has very important properties:

  • Better yields than fossil diesel
  • Lower cost production
  • Increase sustainability

This new technology is developed in a pilot-scale plant for the production of 2 tones of this new biofuel for the road testing in a garbage truck of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Greece. It should be noticed that the work is supported by the EU-Program LIFE+ (www.biofuels2g.gr).
