>> An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.
>> The theme of "Water and Food Security" is high on the agenda this year with three major international events – the World Water Forum, the World Water Day and the World Water Week - that address the relationships between water and food production and look at ways to feed growing populations within the boundaries of our freshwater resources.

As the coordinating agency for this years World Water Day, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations will be host to the official ceremony of UN-Water World Water Day 2012 at its Headquarters in Rome, Italy on March 22. A variety of speakers will be invited to give their perspectives on this years topic of " Water and Food Security".
