1st World Symposium on Multiscale Material Mechnanics and Engineering Sciences [29 Apr - 2 May 2007]

>>  The research contributions and personalities of Frank Nabarro, Ed Hart and Ronald Rivlin have shaped the material and mechanics
       communities of today.
All three, individually and collectively, have marked the evolution of engineering sciences and technologies of the 20th century.
They produced students and followers in all five continents and they have set out an example for the new engineering science
        generation of the 21st century.
This example needs to be emphasized and guide young researchers to avoid overspecialization in their pursuit of excellence.

>> The purpose of this Symposium is to gather together contributors of all ages who have worked closely or were influenced indirectly by these three intellectual giants who have recently left this world. The place of the meeting, Thessaloniki (named after the sister of Alexander the Great), is the meeting point of East and West. All three have visited the City and loved it – Nabarro gave a lecture about Aristotle and Rivlin holds a Honorary Doctoral Degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

>> The Symposium will be held in parallel with the Final Meeting of the European Research Training Network on Deformation and Fracture Instabilities in Novel Materials and Processes (DEFINO) and a Summer School in this area, so that intermixing of fundamentals and applications and an exchange between established more senior and gifted young researchers can be accomplished.
